Small Business Interview: The Modern Crafter

Tell Me About Your Independent Business: The Modern Crafter

The Modern Crafter is a small British indie business between sisters, Rachel and Siobhan specialising in Punch Needle and Embroidery Kits. Siobhan hand designs each pattern and Rachel hand creates the design enjoying the slow creative relaxation along the way!

The kits are assembled by hand in our studio in Saffron Walden using sustainable materials such as organic cotton and their own brand of 100% British Wool. The duo are authors of Punch Needle, 15 Contemporary Projects.

How Has Photography Helped your Punch Needle and Embroidery Kits Business?

Having a selection of professional photographs has been critical to the Marketing of our business. We can refer to our deck of photos for various marketing purposes and apply them across the various communication channels such as our website, newsletters, social media, blogging to make sure we come across with our consistent story.

The batch of photos that we like to pick from range from flatlay on white background which are great to use for PR and some which are lifestyle on coloured backgrounds which compliments our core brand colours. The lifestyle photos are great at portraying the values and ethos of our brand.

Having professional photos has also given us great press opportunities and we have appeared on 91 Magazines blog, magazine, Mollie Makes magazine, Love Embroidery and Prima mag.

Do you have any tips for getting featured in the press?

If you are running an event such as a workshop, why not invite some journalists along complimentary or think about running a press only event. Start building up a contact list, you can find email addresses in the back of magazines and aim to contact them several times! Eventually you will get a foot in!
